Refer a child that needs a bed

The Beds for Kids Project

How it began

The Beds for Kids Project was started in 2014 by Seattle Police Officers Jeremy Wade and Ryan Gallagher to help provide beds to children in need - a project inspired after what they witnessed on a routine call in Seattle’s Central District. When Officers Wade and Gallagher arrived at the scene, they witnessed two young girls who were living in a home with their grandparents, both sleeping on the floor without a bed of their own. The next day, and with their own money, both officers purchased and set up brand new beds for the two young girls.

Seeing the joy these children expressed and realizing that many more children in Seattle are living under similar circumstances, the Beds for Kids Project was born.

Program History

In 2015, Beds for Kids expanded its efforts. It partnered with IKEA and UPS to help transport beds. In September, volunteers from KIRO Radio, the Seattle Police Foundation, SPD, IKEA, UPS, and friends and family came together to build, load, and transport the beds to those most vulnerable. 100 beds were picked up or delivered throughout Seattle and King County.

In 2016, the program was expanded even more. Ron and Don featured the project prominently on their popular radio show and new major sponsors joined the project. Thanks to support from Mattress Firm, OfferUp, and KIRO radio, the Beds for Kids Project was able to provide over 300 beds to children and families in need throughout the Seattle area!

This Year's Goal - 600+ beds!

In response to the incredible demand from children all over our area, KIRO, OfferUp, The Paramount Hotel, and Make Unity have come together to make 2017 our biggest year yet. This coming September 30th, we will offer 3 pick up and locations in King, Snohomish County, and Pierce County.

Our Sponsors

We couldn't have given away over 500 beds in the past three years without the generosity of our sponsors. This year they have partnered with us again with a goal of giving 600 beds to kids. Like us, our sponsors believe that no child should have to sleep on the floor.

Offerup

OfferUp, the largest mobile marketplace for local buyers and sellers, has generously partnered with Beds for Kids for the last two years. Compelled to help both their Law Enforcement partners and their home community, they have donated time and money to help us make sure no child in our community sleeps on the floor.

Kiro Radio

The Ron and Don Show on KIRO Radio has partnered with Beds for Kids since the very beginning. Every year they lead the charge by helping us raise money and spread the word. Without their support and the powerful support of the listeners in the Ron and Don Nation - there is no way that Beds for Kids could happen!

Make Unity

Make Unity is a premier branding and storytelling agency in the PNW. They were first introduced to Beds for Kids when working on a story about Detectives Gallagher and Wade. They documented the event in 2016 and this year have donated thousands of hours to create the videos you see here on this site.

The Paramount Hotel, Seattle

This year we welcome our newest corporate sponsor, The Paramount Hotel. After hearing about the project last year on the Ron and Don show, they were so moved to help that they reached out with a major contribution this year. Helping people get a good night sleep is truly a passion of theirs.
